Police Put Out Alert After Thieves Target Popular Vehicle In Edgewater (And It’s Not a Honda)

Police have issued a community alert in the 20th District after thieves have targeted a popular car parked on Edgewater streets. The incidents happened over a two-day period within just a few blocks of each other.

The alert concerns 2 actual thefts and one attempted theft of what is now considered to be the top stolen car in Illinois – the Dodge Caravan. All three vehicles were locked and parked on neighborhood streets.

the first theft occurred on August 5 on the 1500 block of W. Edgewater Ave. between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. The second incident occurred on August 5 on the 5900 block of N. Glenwood between 10 a.m. and 11 p.m. The third incident happened on August 6 on the 5900 block of N. Greenview between 12:10 p.m. and 2 p.m.

Dodge Caravans have become Illinois’ top stolen vehicle over the past couple years. The older models such as the 2000 year are very easy to break into because they lack the computer chips found in the newer cars that are needed to start the vehicles. All that is needed is a screwdriver and a little muscle to start the engine.

To add to the problem, individual parts for a Dodge Caravan can sell for $4000 on the black market. They are also notoriously easy to use in other crimes.

Police recommend using a steering wheel lock and/or a good security alarm on your vehicle. They are also telling people to be aware of people loitering in the area and to never leave an unattended car running.
