Petsmart And Chipotle Set To Open This Week, Whole Foods Next Month

logosThe grand openings are set and this week as Edgewater should see three large corporate chain stores officially enter the community. Whole Foods, Petsmart and Chipotle all have their eyes set on Edgewater but many are worried that small local businesses may pay the price.

Petsmart at 5210 N. Broadway, which will have its grand opening this Saturday, will add to a growing pet store presence. With a PetCo Unleashed across the street as well, locally owned stores such as Jameson Loves Danger and Ruff Haus will certainly have to find their niche in order to compete. In January, independent store Parkview Pet Supplies closed. Petsmart will also add pressure to local groomers by also offering those services.

In the same strip mall as Petsmart, Chipotle at 5224 N. Broadway Ave. will take aim at the Edgewater market. Rumored to be opening their doors this weekend as well, the Mexican grill will be wrapping up their popular burritos to the masses. All of its stores are corporate owned with no current franchises.

Lastly, Whole Foods is set to open April 29 at 6001 N. Broadway Ave.  The $10 million gut rehab of the former Dominick’s space has been largely anticipated. Whole Foods pleasantly surprised everyone one when they announced a partnership with small locally-owned True Nature Foods across the street. This move to work with a small competitor was met with favorable engagement. Owner of True Nature Paula Campanio told EVB, “They seemed very interested in us succeeding because it was good for both businesses.”
