A 27-year-old man from Kingston, Jamaica who now lives in Edgewater and is studying in the US has been charged in an accident that killed a senior citizen as she crossed a driveway in front of the Edgewater Beach Apartments.

Rayon Allen is charged with reckless homicide after an accident on September 24 killed 93-year-old Lorraine Campion who lived on the same block where the crash took place. According to police, Campion was crossing a driveway on the 5500 block of N. Sheridan around 11:20 a.m. While other vehicles waited for the woman to cross in front of the driveway, Allen made an improper left turn and overtook another vehicle on the left.

That is when Allen struck Campion with his 2015 BMW X5 SUV, pinning her under the vehicle. According to people at the scene, 30 seconds after the incident Allen finally exited the vehicle and tried to pull Campion from under the vehicle by her leg until they intervened.

As everyone was waiting for first responders to arrive, Allen then started entering witnesses vehicles but exited them as people confronted him. He also started to walk away from the scene and returned after again being confronted by a witness. When police arrived, Allen was put into custody but not formally arrested until Oct. 16.

Campion was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston. According to the Cook County medical examiner’s office, she died at 8:35 p.m. from multiple injuries sustained in the incident.

Bail was set at $10,000 for Allen by Judge Mary Marubio at the Leighton Criminal Court Building. He must also submit to a electronic monitoring system and obey a 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. curfew. DUI results are still pending. He is expected to appear next in court on Nov. 6.
