Five Teens Carjack Off-Duty Officer In Edgewater

A group of five teenagers carjacked an off-duty police officer at gunpoint yesterday and fled in her vehicle. The teens were later apprehended on the south side after a brief chase.

The incident happened just after Midnight on Thursday when the 47-year-old off-duty officer was parking her Lexus SUV on the 5800 block of N. Winthrop. According to police, the woman was met by the gang of teenagers after she parked the vehicle.

At that point, one of the male suspects pointed a gun at her and another swiped the car keys from her hand. The five teenagers then entered the vehicle and fled the scene.

About three hours later the Lexus was seen on the south side which led to a brief chase. After coming to a dead-end at 55th and South Shore, the teens exited the vehicle and ran away.  Fortunately police were able to catch up to them and all five were taken into custody.

No one was hurt in the incident. Charges are pending on all five teenagers who include a 16-year-old, a 19-year-old and three 18-year-olds.

Police put out a community alert on October 11 concerning several Northside aggravated vehicular hijackings. In those incidents, the victims were also alone as well as in or near their stopped vehicle.
