5970 N. Ridge a forgotten opportunity?

I’m regularly drawn to vacant or abandoned structures, many of which hide in plain view. The former Carson’s Ribs

    Trader Joe’s

  • I second the Trader Joe’s suggestion.

    • Frank Grimes

I still think the best site Trader Joe’s should look at in our neighborhood would be on the site of the former Piser Funeral Home on Broadway(between Berwyn and Foster, and on the 5200 block), including the expansive parking lot just to the north of there. Why there isn’t a real effort from Ald. Osterman to get that site redeveloped(plus may as well make that site a mixed-retailer, restaurant, etc. development of some sort), is beyond me.

Why more efforts aren’t done to attract businesses to that part of Broadway, are beyond me….

  • Jeremy Mayes

The problem is that getting into the lot from N-W bound Ridge is a bit difficult.

  • Robynmwithay

My mother was a waitress there when it was Town and Country.

      …and the pipefitters.

  • EdgewaterMom

    Trader Joe’s!

A Reggies North, A music venue of some sort that plays music like say Schubas?

  • John

I would say anyone with $2.7 Million dollars….Which is no one these days.

I had heard a rumor Starbucks was interested but that was a while ago. It would be easy for anyone on their way to LSD in the morning to stop in and get coffee without having to double park or pay a meter on Clark Street.

It’s way too small for a Trader Joes which would create a traffic nightmare.

Hmmm, if a 1000 dog owners used that dog park on a regular basis, it would cost $2,700 per owner.

    Binny’s

    • Anonymous

That would be incredible…we need a Binny’s in this area.

  • Ellenwebber

I like all the suggestions but aren’t the in-and-out logistics of this piece of r.e. the challenge for retailers?

  • Jon

    Make it a park.

I pray that one day that White Castle will go away.

  • Inside

Starbucks looked at it and walked away. It’s not a great site folks. 40,000 cars a day zoom by it on their way to and from LSD with no intentions of stopping there. If it was making money Carson’s would have stayed there.

    • EdgewaterMan

Starbucks backed away when they stopped thier expansion nationwide and were bailing out of a lot of leases during a downturn in thier business. It had notheing to do with this site.

  • Anthony

    How about a park?

  • Bowmanblog

I could really picture a fruit/veggie place like Stanley’s on that site. Its the right size and the area would support it.

    • EdgewaterMan

I think a place like Stanley’s Produce wuld be ideal. How about an operation like Wine Discount Center?

  • It was slated to be condo’s at one time, but that fell thru with the rest of the real estate market. Any retail establishment faces the problem of limited traffic flow. A park is too close to fast traffic to be safe for children or animals. Leave it as a testament to human waste. Bet it’ll get an art grant from the government!

  • Milosz

    (1) A disco with a roof-top put-put golf course and beer garden.
    (2) A two story dental/medical office building.
    (3) A strip club.
    (4) A discount tire center.
    Otherwise, I think I’d also take a Binny’s.

    • Pinot

Binnys had a deal penciled in on the site 2-3 years ago but thier architects just couldn’t make it work. The site was too small for them

  • Betty

    I third it.

  • ShellyLulkin

A combo Senior center, nursing home, and long term care facility for the recently released incarcerated who have difficulty mainstreaming into apartments on Sheridan Road.

    • Way Different

Replace “mainstreaming” with “assimilating” and you’ve got it going on Shelly (for there is no “mainstream” there, they don’t want it, nor obviously need it.

      • Way Different

Sorry, but humor is the only way I could cope with the ignorance while living there.

  • Jon

I would love to see a Turkish or Korean bath house at this location.

    • Guest

That’d be good. That or a methadone clinic.

  • Chocolate and Spice

I would love a combination Trader Joe’s and gay bath house at this location.

    • Way Different

A Starbucks and Howard Brown extension clinic would be ideal along with your suggestion.

  • Jon

I think my other comment didn’t go through. I’m for a Turkish or Korean bath “Chocolate and Spice” myself. The only ones are far west and in Wicker. Trader Joes and gay bath house are fine but I don’t think there is the space.

    • Chocolate and Spice

I have nothing against Turks or Koreans, I’m just more of a cheap wine and easy sex kind of guy

  • Rib Advocate

Sorry to spoil the nice bike ride, BUT this lot is already taken. A Metra stop is coming (Ravenswood/Peterson), and this location will be used for parking. But it should still be possible to bike around it.

    • Anonymous

A Metra stop? Really? I guess it makes sense, there is a pretty huge gap on that Metra line
