New Argentine Gelato Shop Set To Open On The Andersonville Strip

The diversity of food in Andersonville just got a little bit more flavor as a new gelato shop with influences from Argentina is set to open on the strip.

Are you wondering what makes Argentine gelato different? Well the husband and wife duo Karla Koziura and Sebastián Koziura, who are co-founders of FRÍO Gelato, want to share their secret with you as they open their new store at 5152 N. Clark in Andersonville.

The difference to Argentine gelato compared to the usual Italian style is in the way it is served. Their gelato is is swirled into the base instead of using a spoon. According to the Koziuras, that process makes the ice cream warmer and softer than other gelatos. Outside of the standard flavors, what also makes FRÍO Gelato unique is their use of Alcohol-infused options such as tequila or malbec wine.

With their first store opening in 2013 in Evanston and another following in 2017 on Southport, this will be the Koziura’s third location. The new 1100 sq. ft. store will be mostly take out. They pasteurize and homogenize their artisanal recipe in small batches daily at a separate location in Evanston and then ship out to the stores regularly.

FRÍO Gelato also boasts its use of all natural ingredients, seasonal fruit, imported Argentine dulce de leche and high quality chocolate. They consider their product allergen friendly using gluten-free ingredients and hormone-free milk. Their family-based business also includes Sebastián’s cousin Enrique Schcolnik, who is the company’s Dairy Consultant.

“We are excited to open in Andersonville,” said Karla Koziura. ” It is the perfect place to open because the neighborhood likes unique artisanal options as well as being so supportive of local businesses. It is such a vibrant community.”

The Koziuras are hoping to open FRÍO Gelato in Andersonville at the end of September.
