Gray Goose Air Lines and the Edgewater Beach Hotel

"Grey" Goose Air Lines advertisement, 1930s.

Of the many comforts offered to Jazz Age/Prohibition era guests of the Edgewater Beach Hotel, the Chicago to Gulf Coast service via Gray Goose Air Lines had to rank with the most exclusive. Passengers were apparently shuttled from the hotel to Chicago’s Municipal Airport (now known as Midway) where Gray Goose operated at the time. The flights heading due south took seven hours to reach the Gulf Coast, an impressive amount of time for the period.

  • Now…the company was clearly called GREY Goose Airlines, why would you intentionally change the spelling of the word? That’s just ignorant.

Referring to the brochure distributed by the actual air line (see link to Uptown History in my story), they spelled it “GRAY.”

The promotional poster is likely a reproduction which includes a misspelling, but it’s hard to say for sure.

    • Mike M

Their stock certificate spells it “Gray” – guess Big D is the ignorant one….
