To make a clear statement on their position on GLBT competitors at the XXII Winter Olympics, Google has updated their ever changing Doodle to include a GLBT positive theme. Underneath the Doodle is the fourth entry from the “Fundamental Principle of Olympism” out of seven of the Olympic Charter.

“The practice of sport is a human right. Every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.”–Olympic Charter

The Google Doodle is in response to Vladimir Putin signing into law anti-gay policies that clearly showcase horrible discrimination towards a large segment of their population. The law can place fines and jail time to anyone that  spreads “propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations” to minors. The law includes speech on the internet and would make any Gay pride rally or parade illegal.

Thousands of people throughout the world are protesting these Olympics by refusing to watch or even boycott corporations that advertise. Many others find that the Olympics will help showcase the irresponsible acts of a government that is slipping further backwards.
