Edgewater’s Comedy Show “Here Is Your Alibi” Marks One Year

1270152_620404784733313_4994039236610657930_oFor the last year, something funny has been happening on Thorndale Ave.

Lev Kalmens, an Edgewater resident, has been producing and hosting a free BYOB comedy showcase once a month at The Frontier storefront theatre since June 2013. “Here Is Your Alibi” (HIYA) features five local comics in a more intimate setting than the average comedy club. The one-year anniversary HIYA special is this Thursday, June 26, at 8 pm.

There aren’t a lot of comedy shows on the far north side. “A lot of the shows are in Logan Square, Wicker Park, and Lakeview,” said Kalmens. For him, this means less competition. For Edgewater and Andersonville residents, it means not having to travel far for entertainment.

“I specifically did not want to do a show at a bar,” said Kalmens. “At The Frontier, everyone who comes there is there for one reason. It was a very deliberate choice of space.”

The Frontier, 1106 W. Thorndale Ave., is one home of Jackalope Theater Co. The group recently opened a theatre in the Broadway Armory, and rents their storefront to up and coming theatre companies for rehearsals and performances. For this reason, the landscape of The Frontier changes often, providing another interesting element for HIYA regulars. When Kalmens launched HIYA last June, the show took place the first Friday of every month. In March, the schedule switched to the third Thursday of every month to accommodate other shows.

“I love the community feel [HIYA] has, with regular audience members coming back month to month,” Kalmens said.

While Here Is Your Alibi is a free event, Kalmens collects donations at the end of each show and distributes cash evenly to the evening’s performers.

Catch the Here Is Your Alibi anniversary special,  featuring some of the years best performers, Thursday, June 26, 8pm, at The Frontier (1106 W. Thorndale Ave.). The show is free and BYOB.
