View 3Like it or not, the strip mall at Foster and Broadway is currently in full construction swing. The walls are going up and the the first buildings are taking shape. Now, Edgeville Buzz has received the first renderings for public view.

The strip mall which was developed by Chody Real Estate Corp at 5206 N. Broadway has created much stir in the neighborhood. Most seem opposed to the notion of this type of development. However, since the plan to construct it was first approved, the 48th Ward Alderman’s office has been working diligently to find solutions to keep the final look somewhat attractive and not problematic to current neighbors who reside near to the complex.

Many architectural elements were addressed such as keeping the structure one story with no alley access and recessed parking away from the street. Other design notes are also notable such as outdoor patio seating and landscaping.

Currently, Petsmart will take up most if not all of the south building. Chipolte has signed a lease for the first store in the north building. That will leave space for at least three more tenants. Many people have expressed concern of more corporate retailers in the community and their detraction from the hyper-local focus that currently gives IMG_5035Andersonville-Edgewater its special reputation. But with local strip mall tenants like Pizzeria Aroma (currently across the street from the development) succeeding in such a space, the possibility remains that small businesses could also do well here.

The 22,000 sq. ft. complex is due to open in 2015.
