Firefighters  responded to an extra alarm fire at 5820 N. Sheridan Road yesterday at 10:30am . The 5 story building fire caused a Emergency Medical Services response calling for multiple ambulances to the scene. Thick black smoke poured out of a second story apartment trapping many people including a unidentified woman who was found unconscious in a stairwell. She was taken to the hospital and is in critical condition. Six other people including a Chicago firefighter were also taken to the hospital with less serious conditions.  All in all, it seems as though over a dozen people were rescued from the building and at least 3 dozen people have been displaced from their homes. The fire was under control within 1 hour after it started thanks to firefighters that were battling the blaze under extreme cold and heavy snow.

According to a WGN News report, a resident who was displaced by the fire blamed the event on an evicted resident who lived in the apartment. Nothing has been confirmed but the incident is under investigation.
