Man Arrested for 48th Ward Burglary, May Be Charged With Setting Area Fires

GrunauerDaniel Grunauer of the 900 block of West Ainslie was arrested by police after a series of fires in the 48th Ward were investigated by area detectives. Mr Grunauer originally denied the charges but after presented with conclusive evidence, he admitted to the burglary and the fire is still being investigated at 5009 N. Sheridan (otherwise known as Somarset Apartments). The fire on June 8 of this year, caused significant damage to the first floor lobby of the building.

Now Mr. Grunauer is suspected of other fires in the area including the recent one on 919-923 W. Margate Terrace.  He lived just across the alleyway from the scene. That suspicious fire burned down the back porch and part of the building. No one was hurt but several people were displaced by the event.

Previously this year on March 30, Mr. Grunauer who then lived at 5800 block of N. Kenmore was charged with making a false report of a man drowning in Lake Michigan. Police rescue boats and a helicopter were called to the scene but gave up the search after realizing it was a hoax. Police traced the 911 phone call to his cell phone.

Through the years Mr. Grunauer was arrested for everything from impersonating a police officer to shutting off power to buildings. Now that he is in jail for his most serious recent crimes, he may be charged with others. Alderman Osterman’s office released an email today stating, “Grunauer was charged with one count of residential burglary, a class 2 felony. He is incarcerated at Cook Count Jail awaiting trial on the burglary charge. Officers and detectives continue to investigate the other fire related incidents and additional charges are possible.” They added, “Alderman Harry Osterman was joined by 2- neighbors and court advocates for the preliminary hearing on the case. The judge has granted no bail and the defendant will stay in custody. There will be another hearing on the bond next week. My office will be following this case with court advocates. If you would like to join us as a court advocate, please contact Marko Zaric at 773-784-5277 or Marko@48thward.org.”
