Owner Of Former Augie’s Restaurant In Andersonville Dies

Augies-Restaurant-5347-N.-Clark-St-910x1024Patrons of the former Augie’s restaurant at 5347 N. Clark St. in Andersonville were disheartened to see their favorite restaurant close back in August, 2007. Augie’s was not trendy at all, but instead was that great local spot where someone could find satisfying comfort food.

For 53 years (1954-2007) Augustino N. Georgopoulos, the owner of Augie’s, served up basic food staples to the neighborhood. Sadly, some good things do come to an end. Almost nine years after closing his restaurant, Augustino has passed away.

In a Tribune article written at the time of the restaurant’s closing, Augustino said, “After 53 years, it’s time to go.” He added, “I feel sometimes guilty, a little bit, because all the people helped me for so many years, but it’s time to do it.”

Those words could not have more meaning as we say goodbye to a man who took care of his neighbors for so may years.

Augustino N. Georgopoulos is survived by his wife Florence, his two children Nicholas and Katherine, and his grandchildren Katherine, Maria, and Anastasia.

Visitation is Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Smith-Corcoran Funeral Home 6150 N. Cicero Ave., Chicago. Family and friends will meet Wednesday morning at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church 2727 W. Winona St., Chicago, IL 60625 for funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Interment Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to St. Demetrios Church would be appreciated.
