Man Robs Local Edgewater Cafe Walking Away With Cash And A Cup Of Coffee

A local Edgewater cafe was robbed last week by a man who flashed a box cutter to the cashier and claimed he had a pistol. He walked away from the business with cash and a cup of coffee the owner poured for him before the incident occurred.

The theft occurred at Kitchen Sink, 1107 W. Berwyn, around 10:45 a.m. on the March 27. According to cafe owner Jeff Fox, the suspect came to the counter and ordered a coffee.  After the coffee was poured, the man quietly told Fox that he had a pistol and then flashed what appeared to be a box cutter. Fox said the man was never aggressive and was quiet enough that the customers in the cafe didn’t notice it happening.

Fox called police immediately and provided them with security footage of the incident. He described the suspect as a white man, 300 lbs, 6 feet tall with a scraggly goatee. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, light colored jeans and a winter hat.

Security footage from a camera at a building around the corner on Winthrop was also able to capture the suspect getting into a tan colored car which was being driven by someone else.

A similar incident happened to the cafe about four years ago which prompted them to install the surveillance cameras. However, Fox says that even though his section of Berwyn is pretty quiet compared to other CTA stops, he still feels safe and that customers seem to look after them.

“It’s obviously not something any business owner wants to deal with but I’m glad I was the one behind the counter when it happened,” said Fox. “At the end of the day, it’s just cash.  No one was hurt and there was never any thought on my part of escalating the situation.  From my perspective it did seem like an act of desperation and if he isn’t caught I at least hope the money was used to make ends meet.”

If you have any information about the robbery, please contact area police or the 48th Ward Office.
