An unknown man is being praised after knocking out a man who was mugging a woman waiting at an Andersonville bus stop. The good samaritan used his thermos to strike the mugger on the head, making him fall to the ground where he stayed until police arrived.

The incident happened in broad daylight Monday afternoon on the 5200 block of N. Clark Steet, one of the busiest sections of Andersonville. According to a DNAinfo article, the woman who was waiting for a bus, noticed a man holding a knife. As she walked away from him, the man grabbed the woman from behind and a struggle ensued.

It was then that the unknown hero came to the rescue, knocking the attacker in the head with his thermos. Many witnesses who were near the scene, described to police what had happened and the actions of the good samaritan.

The mugger, identified as 61-year-old Rolalio Lomeli of the 2600 block of North Shore Avenue, was caught by the police as he still laid on the ground with his head injury. According to prosecutors, police found the weapon, a knife with a hook on one end.

Lomeli now faces charges of armed robbery with a deadly weapon. Yesterday, Cook County Judge Donald Panarese Jr. said he will allow Lomeli to be released on his own recognizance, if he qualifies for the Cook County Sheriff’s Office’s electronic-monitoring program. If Lomeli does not, bail will be set at $100,000 for his release.
