Fire Breaks Out In 72-Unit Edgewater Building, Injures One

An extra-alarm fire broke out last night in a 72-unit building in Edgewater temporarily displacing its residents. According to fire officials, one person was injured with non-life threatening injuries.

The blaze broke out around 8:45 p.m. last night at a five-story apartment complex at 5750 N. Kenmore. Emergency crews arrived at the scene and quickly had it under control by 9:30 p.m.

Fire officials added that the fire broke out in the walls that adjoin two of the floors, most likely where the plumbing is located. Residents were not allowed back in the building until crews got a closer look at the building to confirm there was no other issues.

Both the Office of Emergency Management and Communication and Red Cross responded to the situation in order to help displaced residents. Episcopal Church of the Atonement, which is located across the street, opened their doors to their neighbors as well.
