Edgewater Peterson and Ridge Metra Station Postponed

Metra Station 1The long anticipated Metra station at Peterson and Ridge has been delayed until at least Spring of 2015. The station which will add a much needed new transportation source to many Edgewater residents was estimated to begin this Spring. Unfortunately the legal process to acquire the land has taken longer than expected.

The land in question is owned by both the Chicago Housing Authority and Union Pacific Railroad, according to a SunTimes article today. The properties at 6072 to 6086 N. Ridge, 1776 to 1784 W. Peterson, and 5900 to 6043 N. Ravenswood include land which is currently occupied by parking lots and a community garden. There are no plans for acquisition of any buildings.

Metra Station 2The new station will cost around 15 million to build and will include a covered portico and warming area. The design also features a vehicle entrance with a round-about for departing/arriving passenger pickup. $10 million of the cost has been secured by Alderman Harry Osterman and the other $5 million through state bonds.

The station construction is expected to go out to bid later this year. Once they break ground, residents should expect a year until completion.
