In an article last Wednesday, EVB commented on a Chicago Reader article which tried to make a good case for Cantina 1910 located at 5200 N. Clark Street. However, it ended up shaming Yelpers and the entire community of Andersonville.

Many readers felt that Cantina 1910 should not suffer from the Andersonville-bashing Reader article but instead be praised for the unique culinary style of this new eatery. One thing is clear…it got people talking.

Chef Diane Devila’s creations may not be the darling of the Yelp community, but Cantina 1910 is racking up some serious honors in the press. Devila grew up working at her parent’s Chicago restaurant Hacienda Jalapeños. She left for Oaxaca after high school to study regional Mexican cooking, and it is there that she cultivated her unique farm-to-table culinary style.

After Devila landed the job at Cantina 1910, the food critics in Chicago started to quickly take notice. Chicago Magazine put Cantina 1910 in their November Hot List, and said Devilia’s concept is, “Two dining trends in one: regional Mexican food made with locally grown ingredients. Olé!”

Chicago Eater also put Cantina 1910 on their November Hot List. They praised the restaurant’s fresh concept saying, “A massively-anticipated opening in a massive space in Andersonville, Cantina 1910 is packing patrons in in the early going for chef Diana Davila’s creative, locally-sourced Mexican dishes. Tacos and small plates are the stars.”

Having another restaurant in Andersonville earning culinary praise from critics will surely bring more people here to discover the diverse neighborhood. In turn, other local businesses could benefit from that success.

Cantina 1910 is not for everyone, and every new business needs some time to work out the bugs and find their groove. Until then, they certainly have the positive accolades from critics under their belt.
