Annual Edgewater Tour Gives Rare Access Inside Historic Lakewood Balmoral Homes

Properties expected on this year’s list.

The Edgewater Historical Society has helped preserve the area’s past through many of its programs and exhibits over the years. One of its most anticipated events is the annual Home Tour in which participants get inside access to many of the homes you may walk by every day.

This rare opportunity to view the interiors of historic neighborhood homes will focus on the Lakewood Balmoral area this year. The event takes place next weekend, September 18, between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Once you register, each participant will get a brochure that contains a list of the homes that are being showcased. Once you arrive at the selected home, a docent will give you a brief summary of the property’s exterior and key architectural features. Afterwards, participants will be directed inside the home where another docent will escort small groups while pointing out interior features and highlights.

Properties expected on this year’s list.

Bring comfortable shoes for the event as you may walk up to a full mile. According to the Edgewater Historical Society’s website, “The tour is designed to be a walking tour and homes are selected in each Edgewater neighborhood to facilitate a person being able to walk easily between the homes. On some home tours, there may be a home or two located a few blocks from the majority of homes. In such case, a person may want to save them for the end and drive there; however, most people do walk.”

To participate, you must register at Unity Lutheran Church at 1212 W.Balmoral Ave. This year’s homes are on Magnolia, Lakewood, Berwyn and Wayne, and will be open from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m.
