After More Than 30 Years, Local Edgewater Butcher Shops Closes

After 30 years at 6155 N Broadway, local butcher shop Holzkopf Meat Market officially closed its doors for good this week. Previously Bornhofen Meat Market, Mark Holzkopf took over the business ten just years ago.

Frank Bornhofen, who opened his butcher shop at the location in 1985 , carried the family meat-cutting business at a couple area locations before settling on Broadway. After Holzkopf bought the business in 2007, he added more gourmet specialty items such as pastas, spices and other groceries.

Holzkopf graduated from a three-year apprenticing program back in the 1980s. He worked at Dominicks, where he perfected his craft. At the deli people could buy homemade sausages, meatloaf, stuffed pork chops and meats ground to order.

Unfortunately, the butcher shop is another specialty food store that has closed after Whole Foods moved in a block away in 2015. Paula Companio, who owned True Nature Foods across the street from the big box supermarket, also shut down her Edgewater business and merged with Heartland Cafe in Rogers Park.

“When Alderman (Harry Osterman) told me that Whole Foods was coming in, it was like a cosmic two-by-four,” she told EVB in a April, 2015 story. “I really didn’t expect it. My whole life flashed in front of me. I very quickly began organizing what would be best for my team, myself, and of course the green movement.”

Holzkopf created quite a dedicated following in the decade he owned the business. However, that was not enough to keep the doors open.

“It was a pleasure to serve the Edgewater community for the past 10 years,” the business said in a Facebook post. “We want to thank all of our loyal customers for your support and patronage for so many years.”
