After four years of providing a unique small business retail option for art supplies, Andersonville’s Martha Mae: Art Supplies and Beautiful Things has announced plans to close its brick and mortar store at 5407 N. Clark by month’s end. Their online store however will continue to serve its loyal following of customers.

According to the owner Jean Cate, the store has been a vehicle to serve, connect and celebrate creativity. Accompanied by her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Martha Mae; she has offered the community a place to buy local art, unique art supplies from around the world, and what she lovingly calls ‘beautiful things.’

But COVID-19 and the subsequent economic downturn has proven to be a catastrophe for many small businesses throughout the country. Though her art supply store is another 2020 retail casualty, Cate says she will be expanding the online shop and its digital content.

“I am so grateful for the community of collaborators, customers and friends that share my passion for celebrating everyday practices, work and life through beautiful and thoughtfully designed things,” said Cate. “This time has crystalized how powerful and necessary connection is and I look forward to continuing and deepening my connection with you.”

Cate, who is also an Andersonville resident, wrote on her social media that the purpose of the storefront was to create harmony and connection. As the business goes online only, she has promised to find new avenues to foster that philosophy.

Martha Mae: Art Supplies and Beautiful Things’ pickup/ buying window will be in operation through the end of August, Wednesday through Saturday from 12-3p.m. Visit her online store at marthamae.info
