Subway coming to Bryn Mawr

The sign above confirmes it - a Subway sandwich store will soon open in the retail space at Bryn Mawr and Winthrop which was previously occupied by Bryn Mawr Deli for many years.  In July we reported that Bryn Mawr Deli was “closed for renovations” but rumors that they would not return and a Subway would be their replacement surfaced soon thereafter.

Now we get into the great debate – is this another case of a small business being pushed out by the bigger corporate guys and higher rents, or is Subway’s arrival a postive note as a stable tenant is better than an empty storefront? Personally, I’ll miss Bryn Mawr Deli’s charm, delicious sandwiches and owner Reza’s superb customer service and can’t get too excited about singing the “Five Dollar Footlong” song.

I’m going to miss Bryn Mawr Deli, their food was good and I agree the customer service was excellent.  Unfortunately, without a lot of businesses in the area, foot traffic during the week seems minimal.

No, no, no!!!  How many Subway or McDonalds do we need in this city??  I’d much rather see a  local/independent shop go in here, or at least a DIFFERENT cain other than another Subway and McDonalds.  How about even a Taco Bell, Wendy’s, Burger King, etc…anything BUT another Subway!  Ok, rant over.

omg no another chain ugh, omg my hip neighborhood is going to big corporations. independent business, trader joes, a yoga studio, anything ugggh.  I bought my place a year ago thinking it was going to be a hip fun area with interesting shops now I have to deal with a subway omg.  did i mention trader joes?  I mean i know it doesn’t fit there but trader joes, there i said it again.  lemme just say independent business to this, oh dear what am i going to do.

all joking aside what this street/area needs are businesses and foot traffic.  We aren’t on the same level with regards to commerce as clark is in andersonville.  I say bring it in, let us see where it takes us and get some more foot traffic.  at the very least there will be more foot traffic for some of the fun great places that are already on this strip of Bryn Mawr.  we have a starbucks, Chase and ups here, why not another larger chain business to attract more people coming through the area.  and lets be real we all can deal with getting a sandwich for $5 once in a blue moon.

There’s a Subway where I live on Granville and then not too far from there by the Loyola Redline there is another one. They must be real easy to open up. Are they doing that good? I guess with the economy they are.

I heard that there are now more subways in the US than mcdonalds.  It seems as if they’re as ubiquitous as starbucks now.

Jeremy, your friend that commented with you on the opening of “Nookies” tracked me down in Andersonville because “you look so damn good in that blue suit”.  I hate Subway.  They used to be good before measuring their meat slices.  Bryn Mawr Deli closed because you “fancy” anti-everything people up there can’t afford $9 sandwiches amongst filth, inconsistency and crime.

You can best believe that Subway on that corner of drug dealing is the best thing that will happen to that “neighborhood”. It will be clean both inside and out – set to “corporate” standards or they will quickly leave unless they…… Flourish.

KEEP IT REAL Wisconsin, Lansing, Peoria, Des Moines, Topeka, Waukeagan “artists” and “future movie stars” (i.e. professional 32 y.o. students who have been working on their Masters Degree for, what?, 4 years now?  Take pictures.

P.S.  The new dry cleaner lasted , what,  6 months? No need to clean, press bad t-shirts and saggy jeans. Happy “We’re Gonna Change The World” Edgewater.  Your first mission would be to get the Red Line diverted then take it from there.

Correct. Starbucks (a chain – OMG!) is Flourishing everywhere in these “anti-business” Chicago “neighborhoods”.  Is it because they are consistent in product offerings or because they turn their head to the sex in the bathrooms?  It’s a toss-up.

Subway’s are mostly independent franchises.  These are small businesses.  Most are family owned.  Unfortunately as a franchisor, Subway corporate will drop a store within blocks of another store.  ie Bryn Mawr / Winthrop is 3 blocks away from the Subway at Broadway and Balmoral.  Plus they stick their franchisees with a constant battery of $5.00 foot longs and high advertising contributions, they hardly make much on that sandwich to cover their overheads, so most owners are in there making sandwiches themselves!  Eventually, Subway will either have to raise their prices, or stores will start shutting down.  As corporations go, they take the cream off the top, and leave very little behind for the independent owner.

Subway isn’t that bad considering that Flourish and the cleaner closed and Salon Echo has downsized.   So with all the money that the city has poured into Bryn Mawr, what do we get?  Subway and the Edgewater Development Corp office.  One would have thought that a development corp across the street could have brought us something better.

    I’d much prefer a local store/business.

But even if a chain is what goes there – it’s unfortunate that it’s a Subway. Chicago is lousy with them. We seem to only ever see Subway and Dunkin’ Donuts stores open here.

And I don’t know how “stable” a tenant Subway will be. The quality varies widely depending on the franchise owner (same with Dunkin’).
