New Greek-American ‘Breakfast Club’ Opening In Old Summerdale Space

kanela-1Another restaurant is going to give the space at 5413 N. Clark a try. The storefront has had problems finding a business that can go the long haul. After Ole Ole closed in 2010; Marigold, Bull Horns Taco Bar and most recently Summerdale have all ceased business after a short time open.

Recently, the front windows have been freshly papered up with the name of the new contender, Kanela Breakfast Club. The company which already has four locations in Wicker Park, Old Town, Lakeview and Streeterville promises to bring a local, organic take to ‘Greek-infused American breakfast and lunch.’

Owner Chris Lardaki and investor Alexi Giannoulias (who is the former Illinois Treasurer) are hoping to open the restaurant in May.

The name Kanela itself means cinnamon in Greek. The philosophy, according to their website is that “Everything we cook is from scratch and with local organic ingredients whenever possible. We offer a refreshing take on mama’s recipes and deliver them to you just the same way she always did, with love and a smile.”

The menu consists of your favorite breakfast items such as french toast and benedicts as well as popular lunch fare. Most entrees range between $10-$13. Most recently, Chicago Eater named their breakfast Sandwich one of the area’s best. Also, Thrillest ranked them in their ‘best new Chicago brunches of 2015.’
