New Chicago Wine Series Attempts To Capture The Essence Of Andersonville

We all love a bit of vino! Now one area winery devotes a new series of wines that try to capture the style of seven different Chicago neighborhoods including Andersonville.

With several venues across the country, City Winery Chicago (1200 W Randolph) boasts being a culinary and cultural experience for customers who are passionate about sharing wine, music, and culinary arts. Offering a complex that includes concerts, food and specialty classes, the company developed the Chicago series of wines to entice aficionados as the Holiday season approaches

They have selected Andersonville, Pilsen, Old Town, Hyde Park, Lincoln Park, Wrigleyville and the Gold Coast to be represented in the collection. According to a press release, the wines were created to celebrate the bond between the city’s evolving wine culture and City Winery’s role as an urban winemaker.

Each bottle’s label showcases symbols of the communities they represent. Designed by West Town resident Sarah Foote, the Andersonville artwork displays an aerial shot of the neighborhood overlaid with the iconic water tower, distinctive street signs and surrounded by the Swedish blue and yellow.

Citing the neighborhood as laidback, charming and very friendly, the Andersonville Chardonnay is meant to capture the chilled out style of area residents. Produced in California, the wine displays aromas of apple and white flowers, and flavors of poached pear and lemon zest. It is full-bodied with a creamy texture and medium oak. They suggest pairing it with salmon, shellfish, poultry, Mediterranean cuisine and soft, mature cheeses.

You can buy the Andersonville-devoted wine for $26 a bottle or the whole neighborhood wine collection for $150. For more information about the wines go to citywinery.com/Chicago.

Here is the complete collection of neighborhood wines:

Andersonville Chardonnay : This Chicago northside neighborhood is laidback, charming and very friendly, just like our “Andersonville Chardonnay”. It is the perfect setting to chill out with a glass of Chard and good company at a restaurant on Clark Street or a gathering with friends in one of the 19th century row houses the neighborhood is known for. Tasting notes: This elegant California Chardonnay displays aromas of apple and white flowers, and flavors of poached pear and lemon zest. Full-bodied with a creamy texture and medium oak. Pairs beautifully with salmon, shellfish, poultry, Mediterranean cuisine and soft, mature cheeses. ABV 14.3%

Wrigleyville Syrah : is a racy grape that packs a punch of flavor and delivers pure joy. Win or lose, Wrigleyville can count on our Syrah to keep everyone happy…or hopeful! Tasting notes: Opens with aromas of blueberry, nutmeg and cloves segued by flavors of blackberry, plum, olive and pepper. Full-bodied, fruity, juicy with medium tannins and a dry, warm finish. Great with beef, lamb, Mediterranean and Latin cuisines. ABV 13.8%

Lincoln Park Cabernet Sauvignon : Before becoming a lawyer, Abraham Lincoln was a bartender and tavern owner and it is said that he loved red wine, which he sold for 25 cents a glass. City Winery thought it fitting to create a Cab, Chicago’s most popular red, to honor our very own bartender-in chief and the iconic lakefront neighborhood named after him. Tasting notes: Deep color with aromas and flavors of blackberry, currant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood. Good tannin structure, moderate acidity and long finish. Great with anything off the grill. ABV 13.7%

Hyde Park Pinot Noir : Pinot Noir is a grape of true character and personality and so is Hyde Park, a neighborhood steeped in history and home to iconic Chicago institutions. Just like Hyde Park, Pinot Noir has withstood the test of time, while remaining unique and beloved by all. City Winery’s “Hyde Park Pinot Noir” celebrates both while bringing joy to many…for years to come. Tasting notes: Aromas of raspberry, vanilla and red cherry followed by flavors of yellow plum, sweet herbs and a hint of nutmeg. Light to medium bodied, pairs well with poultry, salmon, pasta and light cheeses. ABV 13.5%

Pilsen Roussanne : Roussanne, a grape originally from the Rhône region in France, produces savory wines that pair beautifully with the flavorful Mexican cuisine found in Pilsen, a diverse and vibrant Chicago neighborhood rich in culinary tradition and art. The label in our ‘Pilsen Roussanne” features an artistic rendition of the colorful murals found along 16th street, one of the neighborhood’s main attraction. Tasting notes: Our Pilsen Roussanne is a savory white that offers aromas and flavors of lemon, apricot, honey, baked apple and spearmint. Oily, minerally and slightly oaky, this California Roussanne is a versatile, food friendly white that favors spicy, full flavor dishes. 14.4%

Old Town Sauvignon Blanc : Sauvignon Blanc is truly a “fun wine”, the kind that puts a smile on your face after the first sip. When looking for a neighborhood to name ours after, Old Town, home of Second City, the epitome of fun in Chicago, was the logical choice so we “paired” the two, giving birth to our “Old Town” Sauvignon Blanc! Tasting notes: Aromas and flavors of citrus, peach, yellow plum and apricot. An easy-drinking white perfect for any occasion. pairs with seafood, poultry and most cheeses. Serve chilled. ABV 13.4%

Gold Coast Cabernet Sauvignon : This premium Napa Cabernet Sauvignon embodies what Chicago’s Gold Coast is known for: elegance, style and an appreciation for the very best.
