Hoping to fill a void in the neighborhood; a new store in Andersonville has opened offering a unique blend of plants, stationary and fresh cut flowers.

Foyer Shop and Foyer Floral opened last month at 1480 W. Berwyn Ave. in the old Tulip Toy Gallery space. Sibling owners Alma and Carlo Vescovi’s main focus will be easy-to-manage plants and floral creations along with other items they like to refer as ‘treasures’ such as stationery and notebooks.

The plants, according to Alma are all uncomplicated easy-to-manage foliage that are geared towards not only experts but also those who feel they lack green thumb. The floral arrangements can be ordered for gifts and special occasions. She is also offering plant advice to anyone who has purchased from her store or anywhere else.

“There are a lot of people who feel they are terrible with plants,” said Alma. “I just don’t agree. I think people beat themselves up about it, but in fact they just hadn’t received good instructions. We wanted to open a shop and help people fill their spaces with green things again, even if they are intimidated with past experiences.”

The store is only about 400 sq. ft., but the Vescovis hope that will set them apart from larger garden centers and nurseries. They feel the intimate space will allow them to give everyone that comes in personal attention so that they leave with items that are suitable for their space.

In addition to the plants, Foyer sells goods such as stationary and tools which are laid out neatly on desks throughout the store.

“Honestly, sometimes I walk in here and it doesn’t look like a store so much as it looks like a plant hoarders living room,” Alma joked. “But the size of the store works to our advantage by giving people a stronger sense of what something would look like in their own home.”

To make the most of the space, the Vescovis are planning to do workshops in the near future. Capitalizing on quirky trends such as bullet journals and kokedamas they are hoping to offer special classes soon to help educate and inspire. They are also planning plant workshops as well, likely coordinating them both in-store and at a booth they will be setting up at the Andersonville Farmer’s Market this year.

The Vescovis feel like Andersonville is the right fit for their concept,”I could not imagine a better neighborhood to start a small business. I’ve been thinking about opening up a shop for a while now and this is my dream community to open it in.”

Foyer Shop is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday 11 a.m. – 7 p.m., Saturday 12 p.m. – 8 p.m. and Sunday 12 p.m. – 7 p.m.
