Edgewater’s Cedar Park To Celebrate Reopening Tomorrow After $200K Facelift

Cedar Park at 5311 N. Winthrop in Edgewater will celebrate its grand reopening tomorrow after a two-month $200K renovation that will provide an improved play park for children.

According to the Chicago Park District, the renovated playground will provide a colorful action-packed play area that includes swings, slides and upgraded climbing elements that will for both younger and older children. The renovation also brings the park new lighting, walkways, fencing, trash receptacles, drinking fountain and improvements to the existing spray pool and landscaping.

The new playground also complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to be accessible to children with disabilities.

The enhancements to the park were a joint effort between a group of  five residents who started the Cedar Park PAC in 2017 and Alderman Harry Osterman. According to the Cedar Park PAC President Kate Polgar the park had some safety issues and some of the equipment needed improvements in order to be more engaging and available to kids of all ages.

“We love Cedar Park because it is such a sweet pocket park,” said Polgar. “It needed some love, so five of us started the PAC. We worked with the Alderman and the Chicago Park District closely to make this happen. Seeing the children playing in the park tomorrow will be the icing on the cake for us all.”

Acquired in 1958, the City of Chicago bought the property and gave it to the Chicago Park District one year later for them to develop as a play park. It officially was named Cedar Park in 1973 and was among many parks at the time to be named after trees native to the area.

The grand reopening will be Friday, August 3 at 4 p.m. Alderman Harry Osterman, the Chicago Park District and the Cedar Park Advisory Council will all be on hand for the official ribbon cutting and ice cream social.
