Edgewater Residents Come Together To Raise Funds For Local Refugees

Microsoft Word - Sauce and bread 2.0.docxWith US immigration concerns and the world-wide refugee crisis taking center stage in the news, local refugees in the Edgewater area have been in need of ongoing support.

To address those needs, a group of Edgewater residents have teamed up with area restaurant Sauce and Bread at 6338 N. Clark to raise necessary funds. From 7 p.m.-10 p.m. on Friday, March 3, Sauce and Bread will be making gourmet pizzas and  100% of the profits from the night will go to support refugee families through the Heartland Alliance Kovler Center in Edgewater.

“I am not connected with the Heartland Alliance, I had just met  Sauce and Bread owner Mike Bancroft and while discussing potential fundraising around my daughter’s preschool he mentioned that they were looking to line up fundraising events for the first Friday of each month,” said area resident Mark Mesle.  “I had a couple groups of friends who were looking to get more civically engaged and do some good and I was interested in working on refugees in particular.  Because Mike had a previous relationship with Heartland Alliance, my friends and I agreed we could work together to help generate a crowd and get the word out.”

According to their website, Heartland Alliance Kovler Center helps transform the lives of individuals recovering from the complex consequences of politically-sanctioned torture. Kovler Center provides medical, mental health, and social services; trains and educates locally and globally; and advocates for the end of torture worldwide. They work throughout the Midwest and in 20 countries around the world, serving more than 500,000 people each year.

You can stop into Sauce and Bread anytime from 7 p.m.-10 p.m. March 3 to participate. There will be both carry-out and delivery options.  You can also purchase a $15 tickets in advance online for a pizza sampler. In addition, the tickets can be purchased if you can’t make it but just want to make a donation.
