CTA_derailment2At 2:07 p.m. Saturday afternoon, a CTA southbound Red Line train derailed as it approached the Granville station in Edgewater. One person suffered a shoulder injury and was taken to Swedish Covenant Hospital.

All 175 passengers were extracted successfully off the train by 3:30 p.m. According to reports, all emergency procedures went as planned even though passengers grew increasingly anxious during the hour long wait for rescue. A second delayed train was also evacuated due to track power being turned off after derailment.

At just before 7 p.m. the CTA Tweeted that service had been restored, nearly five hours after the derailment. Southbound train began making all regular stops, but northbound train were express from Addison to Howard due to the derailment and ongoing track work.
