City Council Passes Remap
The Chicago City Council Rules Committee yesterday passed a new ward remap for the city. For the 48th Ward, the new map brings just a few minor changes. Most notably, the area at Lawrence and Broadway will no longer be a part of the 48th Ward and will become a part of the 46th. This will put the legendary Uptown Theatre in James Cappleman’s Ward, uniting the “Uptown Theatre District” under one Ward which already included the Aragon Ballroom and Riviera Theater.
In an email to constituents, Cappleman states: “With the new addition of the Uptown Theatre, Annoyance Theater, and the historic Green Mill within the 46th Ward, I will have the ability to better coordinate efforts to make the Entertainment District a destination point for the entire Chicago metropolitan area. The 46th Ward already includes the Aragon Ballroom and the Riviera Theatre.”
A small chunk of Andersonville, south of Foster along Clark Street to Broadway, is now represented by 47th Ward Alderman Pawar. Another minor change will come in the north, as a small area of residents who were previously represented by Joe Moore’s 49th Ward just south of where Sheridan briefly runs east/west and north of Granville (including Berger Park) will become a part of the 48th.
The new maps passed with a 41-8 vote, with the following Alderman voting “no”: Fioretti (2nd), Sawyer (6th), Zalewski (23rd), Chandler (24th), Waguespack (32nd), Colon (35th), Sposato (36th), Arena (45th). Ald. Toni Foulkes (15th) was absent. For a clearer version of the new boundaries, we recommend checking out this Google Map from WBEZ.
