Edgewater’s Chicago Jewish Day School at 5959 N Sheridan Rd was evacuated Tuesday morning after someone telephoned a bomb threat.

The incident, which happened shortly after 9 a.m., caused faculty to evacuate the school consisting of about 200 pupils from kindergarten to eighth grade. Police quickly arrived at the scene and began checking for any explosive devices.

At 10:50 a.m., police declared the building safe after their search turned up nothing. All students were allowed back in the building two hours after the initial evacuation.

U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky who is Jewish and also resides in the area condemned the incident as an act of “telephone terrorism.”

“I am monitoring the situation closely and offer my full support to the community during this troubling time,” said Schakowsky. “I will support law enforcement in their investigation, and hope that justice will be brought swiftly to the perpetrator of this heinous act. Anti-Semitism, in all of its ugly forms, is unacceptable and has no place in our country today.”

Eleven other Jewish day schools and community centers received bomb threats this morning throughout the nation including Whitefish Bay north in Milwaukee.
