After Closing In Late March, Maddiebird Bakery Will be Missed On Devon

Edgewater’s highly praised sweet spot Maddiebird Bakery at 1445 W Devon which made iconic cupcakes and other goodies to the legion of loyal customers quietly closed at the end of March. However, the love that poured out on social media truly speaks volumes about how much they will be missed.

The announcement was initially made on February 9 on their Facebook page and expressed a heartfelt message about the love of making delicious things for the community and the struggle that exists for for many who open a small business. In their five years in business, owners Michele and Aaron McAtee gained a dedicated following but the need to focus on family outweighed the challenges that faced a growing business.

“This was an excruciating, but simple decision to make, really, because I need more time to take care of myself and my family,” said Michele McAtee in the Facebook message. “Once the bakery is closed, we look forward to a new chapter in our lives that involves more time doing things we enjoy together, without the great responsibility of running a small business. I exceeded our wildest dreams by having a successful and well-reviewed honest-to-goodness bakery in Chicago!”

The community has since expressed their love for the bakery and the sadness for their departure. In fact, the post has garnered a whopping 461 Facebook reactions thus far and 309 sincere Facebook comments. Those messages confirmed the huge impact the small business had on many people’s lives in the area over a short amount of time.

“We have made friendships and memories that will last our lifetimes,” McAtee continued. “I know we have succeeded in creating a wonderful, accepting community here. We have nothing but love and gratitude to our loyal staff, long-time employees and employees that have come and gone, who have come in and given all their different talents and hard work, and always with good jams and good humor. We have such gratitude and love for our faithful customers, whom we’ll miss seeing on a regular basis, and we thank you for the good times we’ve shared.”
