Steep Theatre To Open Cabaret Lounge In Adjoining Storefront

Steep Theatre Company at 1115 W Berwyn Ave is capitalizing on its continued success by expanding into the adjacent storefront to the East of the venue offering an additional space for the compa

Founded in 2000, Steep took over a property which housed a small grocery store and has since been dedicated to its mission. In that short period of time, they have gathered incredible reviews and have made Edgewater a destination for its audience.

They recently took over the 750 sq ft space next door at 1113 W. Berwyn a little over a year ago and have been using it as a temporary rehearsal space. The new plans call for it to become what Steep Theatre Executive Director Kate Piatt-Eckert is calling a new cabaret lounge venue with a small stage and flexible seating which can sit about 20-30 people.

“So much of our work is about inciting conversations and it will create a space that is conducive to that,” said Piatt-Eckert. “In addition to expanding our artistic and story telling capacity, the space also deepens our roots with the community. It creates a space where community can gather.”

The theatre is currently applying for a liquor license and the lounge will offer their patrons a cozy area to unwind before and after shows.  The new space will also showcase a series of additional performances, allowing them to push forward their mission of sharing stories and bringing together community in a non-theatrical context. This will include music, story telling, play readings and smaller performances.

“We are finding new ways to do more of what we do, to do it better and support the artists that share their talents with us on our stage,” Piatt-Eckert added. “We really feel we found a good home in Edgewater and want to be a part of this community in what ever way that evolves into.”
