Edgewater High Rise Fire Kills Woman And Her Service Dog

A fire broke out in an Edgewater beach apartment complex yesterday morning claiming the lives of both a woman and her service dog.

First responders received a call around 9:20 a.m. about a fire in a 8-story building on the 5200 block of N. Kenmore.

When firefighters entered the apartment they found both a 58-year-old woman and her service dog unresponsive on the living room floor. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the blaze started on the kitchen stove in the seventh floor apartment. It was quickly extinguished by 10 a.m.

According to authorities, the fire was contained to the one apartment, however there was water damage to several surrounding units.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office identified the woman as Linda Collins. No other injuries or displacements were reported.
