Rivendell Theatre’s Premiere of Rasheeda Speaking

Rasheeda Speaking

Rasheeda Speaking

Currently running local neighborhood Rivendell Theatre through February 16th, is the premier of Rasheeda Speaking directed by Sandy Shinner. Chicago playwright Joel Drake Johnson has chosen Rivendell to premiere the work and the small theatre has done an impressive job of utilizing the space to make it feel like you are sitting with the cast members through the tense ups and downs regarding power dynamics and more specifically race, within the workplace. With an impressive cast that includes Ora Jones, Tara Mallen, Eric Slater, and Lorraine Freund, Rasheeda Speaking leaves the audience questioning each individual’s character and responsibility in participating in the stereotypes that come along with race, gender, and status.

Rivendell Theatre’s Rasheeda Speaking

The play begins with a white male lead physician coercing his white administrative assistant to take notes on her co-part, a black female administrative colleague, as he has been unimpressed with her attitude and behavior in the office. The power dynamics at play modify the relationship among the women colleagues, who were once casual friends through work, but are now forced into desperate measures to keep their professional status.  The show does an amazing job of exposing the deteriorating impact on one’s state of mind and well being when we do not discuss or challenge the deeply rooted discrimination that exists in and around us. The play draws upon images of Chicago neighborhood’s and character types we can all identify.
