Women & Children First Bookstore Celebrates 40 Years Strong With Community Block Party

It has been a four decades of serving the community at Women & Children First Bookstore at 5233 N. Clark  as they offer more than 30,000 books about women, children’s publications and a large selection of LGBTQ fiction and non-fiction. To celebrate 40 years strong, they will be inviting all to a very special free block party that includes entertainment and food by local restaurants.

The summer block party will be held Saturday, August 24 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the honorary Women & Children First Way which is located at Farragut Ave and Clark St. The 40th anniversary of the bookstore will have a feminist slant as it showcases area talent including a drag queen story hour for kids (and adults), the all-female Beastie Boys tribute band She’s Crafty,  Chicago’s all-female and nonbinary glam brass marching band The Clamor & Lace Noise Brigade, and much more.

Three tents will be on hand providing things to do such as kids’ activities and games, radical screen printing on postcards by local store RAYGUN, and they will be making a community art piece on the theme of “What Women & Children First means to me.” Inside the bookstore, attendees will be able to watch video tributes, a scrapbook commemorating the business’ history, and even a Lego version of their store. The event will end with a special bubbly toast with the co-founders, co-owners, and special guests at 4:30 p.m.

Neighborhood restaurants are also coming together to offer complimentary food and beverages. Businesses participating include Bar Roma , Big Jones, The Coffee Studio, Candyality, FRIO Gelato, Hopleaf, Meeting House Tavern, Middle East Bakery, Octavio, Replay, True North and more.

The entertainment line-up includes:

  • 11:30 a.m. – Drag Queen Story Hour
  • 12:15 – Laura Doherty
  • 1 p.m. – ShaZah
  • 2 p.m. – Artemis Singers
  • 3 p.m. – She’s Crafty – Chicago’s All-female Beastie Boys Tribute Band
  • 4 p.m. – The Clamor & Lace Noise Brigade – Chicago’s all-female & nonbinary glam brass marching band!
