I repeat: there are a few really bad rental buildings, including one in the 5700 block of N Winthrop, that are the major contributors to the crime wave in Edgewater. Listen, people, we CANNOT let Edgewater revert to the condition it was in c. 1995, but that will happen if we don’t get aggressive about making landlords/managers accountable for the type of people they rent to. Mary Ann Smith was very proactive about cleaning up bad buildings and penalizing their owners and managment, up to and including yanking them into housing court and winning court orders to sell and/or vacate the building. Osterman isn’t so aggressive and seems unaware of the problem. We need to start documenting episodes stemming from each troubled property- was a tenant, a visitor, how many crimes are associated with people living on the property, what incidents took place and when, and get these places into housing court. Let’s get started. Every time I see obvious gangbangers congregating in front of a building, I call the alderman’s office. But we all can’t see everything- just report what YOU see and get together with other neighbors to organize action. We need to let bad landlords and the alderman know that we don’t want our neighborhood turned into a dumping ground for ex-cons and other undesirables, and not let this happen.

The shooting in the 5200 block was literally out front of my window, I heard 4 gun shots. This is ridiculous, I have been in the neighborhood for two months and have heard three shootings. What can we do?? This has to stop before innocent people get hurt or killed!!

wht harry needs to do his fire the guy tht runs his office for starters then he needs to take some people who can actually relate and reason with some of these guys and let them do wht they can to help stem some of the unecessary violence on the streets because no one in the office can relate to the street guy amymore. the best and effective way of policing any enviorment is to have an affective and accountable relationship with all of whom u police. the best police of chicago new the guys they dealt with every day and therefore solved and prevented more crime through relationship. thts why when these same guys go to prison the jails arent constantly rioting because the prison administration concedess it must keep some form of an open door policy with its inmates. so in turn in society the alderman of every ward is like the warden of the neighborhoods so he should have an open door policy with all his inmates-members of society,the good as well as the bad and find out who runs wht in these hoods and see if their is any positive role these guys can play in the hoods they hang in and may possibly control or have major voice and influence their is always a man or men of reason in any walk of life

I know listening to the scanner last night, there was a lot of confusion over addresses as happened very fast. They were also treating 3 locations under once incident. So the 52xx incident may be mixed in with one of the others as all of them were part of the same shooting (it was one of those incidents where they were moving as they shooting).
