Watch Your Step! Hazardous Cuts Opened Up On Andersonville Sidewalks

gravel2You don’t really notice them until the gravel finds its way into your sandals or the unleveled sand forces you to jut to the side. That’s when you may be thinking: “What are these long, rectangular-shaped cuts in the middle of the sidewalk on North Clark Street in Andersonville, anyway?”

According to Jennifer Block, director of media relations for Peoples Gas & North Shore Gas, the openings on the sidewalk are part of mandatory maintenance work and should be fully restored before Tuesday.

“As part of maintaining Chicago’s natural gas system to ensure safety and reliability, Peoples Gas does regular checks on our gas mains and service pipes around the City,” Block wrote in an email to the Edgeville Buzz.

“We pay special attention to those pipes made of materials like steel which can be prone to underground corrosion if neglected. The work performed between the 5200 and 5600 block of North Clark Street was necessary maintenance work to minimize the rate at which corrosion could take place to the service pipes, which run from our gas main to each property.”

gravel1Block said Peoples Gas started this mandatory work, which included openings along the sidewalk on North Clark, on Friday, July 24. When some of the company’s gas customers indicated a community event was taking place that weekend, Peoples Gas stopped its work and returned after the weekend event to complete the work the following Monday, July 27, and Tuesday, July 28.

“We are making every effort to have the sidewalks fully restored before Tuesday, Sept. 8, ahead of the first day of school for Chicago Public School students,” she added. “It is likely that our contractor will be pouring fresh concrete as early as this Friday, weather permitting.”

Dan Luna, chief of staff for 48th Ward Alderman Harry Osterman, said Peoples Gas has ordered restoration permits and the company is making the project’s completion a priority.
