On Monday, July 9, 2012, 10:00 A.M. at 6300 N. Broadway (NW corner of Broadway and Rosemont) join the local community, elected officials and green enthusiasts for a dedication of Edgewater’s first victory garden, Vedgewater.

We first wrote about Vedgewater in April, which is a  community garden with 185 raised-beds made possible through a  a partnership with The Peterson Garden Project, Alderman Patrick O’Connor and Loyola University Chicago (who donated the plot of land).  The garden affords local residents, who might not other-wise have the space, an opportunity to grow their own fresh vegetables, fruits, herbs etc. while building community and taking part in the urban “grow your own” movement.  It has since been featured on WTTW in a feature on community gardening.

Troy McMillan, past-president of Edgewater Neighbors North block club has been championing the cause for the past two years. After meeting LaManda Joy, founder of The Peterson Garden Project during her presentation at Loyola’s North Lake Shore Earth Day in 2010, McMillan sought to foster a partnership that would bring an edible garden to fruition in Edgewater. The partnership has been extremely fruitful.
