The second annual Edgewater 5K Back to School Run/Walk is sponsored by the Edgewater Chamber of Commerce and will take place on Sunday, Sept. 27, starting at 8 a.m.

“We had about 800 participants last year, which was phenomenal for a first-time event,” said Ally Brisbin, marketing and events manager for the Edgewater Chamber of Commerce. “Registrations are up from last year, but most of the registrations will take place the week before the event no matter how much we wish this would happen earlier.”

The cost of the registration is $42 per individual or $126 for a family of four. Five dollars of that fee will be donated to a 48th Ward K-12 school of your choice. Eleven schools are included. Funds will also be used to support students who otherwise would be unable to afford to participate.

“The event is used to promote community,” Brisbin said. “You can live in the same apartment building, and not all of the kids will go to the same school.”

This event encourages students and families to get to know each other as they traverse a lovely path along the lakefront.

New this year, Brisbin said, is a timed chip, which all participants will receive. This will allow each person to keep track of his or her own time and to compare it with last year’s results.

The event will kick off at Rosemont and Kenmore at the new Loyola/St. Ignatius Community Plaza. WGN TV’s Tom Skilling, also an Edgewater resident, will be a featured guest who may send the runners off at 8 a.m. About 5 minutes later, the joggers/walkers will be sent on their way and, shortly after that, participants with dogs will take the road.

The walkers and runners will proceed east to Sheridan Road, south to Ardmore, then on to the bike path, down to Foster and back. Sheridan Road will even be closed for about an hour to allow participants to walk in the street.

The event will conclude at roughly 9 a.m. and will be followed by a pancake breakfast.

So while you engage in some healthy exercise along with neighbors and friends, you can also help support your favorite local school. For more information and to register, go to www.edgewater.org.
