Thieves Targeting New Vehicle Make In Edgewater

Police issued a community alert over the weekend concerning a rash of vehicle thefts in the Edgewater neighborhood targeting the same make of vehicle.

After several reports over the last few years about thieves targeting Honda vehicles and Dodge Caravans, police have now warned the community that they are eyeing a new brand. At least three different times from June 20 through June 26, Subarus have stolen in Edgewater.

According to police, all the cars were parked on the street and locked. The vehicles in question were located on the 5800 block of N. Glenwood between 7 p.m. on June 20 and 8 a.m on June 21, the 1200 block of W. Ardmore between 5 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. on June 24, and the 1200 block of W. Bryn Mawr between 9 a.m. on June 25 and 6:45 a.m. on June 26.

Nationwide, older 1990 to mid-2000 Subaru vehicles are at the highest risk because they do not have features installed such as keyless or electronic key starters and computer-based security systems like the newer models. They are also easily accessed by using filed down “bump keys.” Police did not say if the stolen cars had any security devices installed.

Many of the Subarus are stripped down and sold for parts. However, others may be used to commit other crimes such as the illegal sale of drugs.

If anyone has information on the crimes please call Area North detectives at 312-744-8263 regarding pattern #P19-N-179.
