Residents Concerned About Edgewater Medical Center Asbestos Removal And Demolition

With demolition of specific Edgewater Medical Center buildings in the near future, area residents are raising concerns about the process and communication by the developer, MCZ.

In a statement by Alderman Patrick O’Connor, he acknowledged that many of the people who live near the site have been contacting his office with questions. One email that came from a member of West Edgewater Area Residents (WEAR) expressed residents doubts that asbestos removal has been properly done. The email continued to reflect further concerns that the demolition will begin before this problem is addressed.

Todd Mullen with MCZ development responded in a letter to the Alderman’s office saying that they plan to start demolition of each building once it has been cleaned of the asbestos and a certified report is filed by the state certified remediator.

“The first building we are working on is the 1619 building and there is pretty limited asbestos in that building,” said Mullen. “Nothing will be torn down until that building is clean and we will continue on like that until the site is complete.  The work will continue on the Edgewater side then transition to the Hollywood side.”

The remediator should be filing a report in the next couple days for the first building and the demolition will start once those papers have been filed with the state.

The contractor for the remediation is DDS Environmental and demolition will be handled by Groundcrew.

In addition to the remediation contractor, we have contracted with EPS Environmental to do continued testing during the process for all potential contaminants,” added Mullen. “MCZ takes the neighbors’ concerns seriously and we are working hard to make sure everything is done to meet the requirements on us by the state and the city.”

The Alderman’s office acknowledged that there will most likely be ‘disruptions’ to the neighborhood. They encourage residents to contact their office with concerns.
