Rare Violin Stolen From Edgewater Home

A 226-year-old Januarius Gagliano violin was stolen from a house in the 5200 block of North Wayne Ave. sometime between midnight and 7 a.m. this past Tuesday. Professional violinist Lori Ashikawa and her husband were asleep when someone entered their home with a spare key that had been hidden outside of the residence. Ashikawa said the violin was left on a table after she had finished practicing. She also indicated that the instrument, its case and 2 bows were the only items missing. Violin dealer Geoffrey Fushi places the value of the violin “in the hundred thousand dollar range.”

Police encourage anyone with information to call Belmont Area detectives at (312) 744-8263.
