Pop Hair opens on Balmoral

By Jeremy Bressman

Just less than a month after Gold Crown Barber closed down, a new hair salon enters the small space at 1481 W Balmoral.  Pop Hair has opened under owner and stylist Kenny Moore.

“As a long time Andersonville resident, I’m excited to be part of the small business community here. With 20 years of experience in the salon industry, Pop Hair will cater to both men and women, offering cut and color services,” Moore stated to the Edgeville Buzz.

Open Tuesday through Saturday, prices at Pop salon are described to be “mid-priced” with a men’s cut costing $28 and women’s cuts costing $43.  For more information and photos of the new space, check out Pop Hair’s Facebook page or call 773-666-3504.

Yikes! $28.00? I’m all for supporting the little guy, but the little guy really needs to analyze his/her market and understand what other prices are being offered in the area. Granted, you have some very “high end” salons that are starting to pop into A’ville (so I say, Welcome Pop Hair!) I see a golden opportunity if they lowered their prices just a bit to attract a decent customer base.

Over all, welcome, but think of maybe offering some discounts and/or price reductions to attract some customers and get them into your store. Simple marketing tools that shouldn’t be too much of a cost to you! Best of luck!

$28 is not expensive for a great hair cut and Kenny is amazing. Cheap hair cuts look cheap. You get what you pay for and this is Chicago not a small rural town.

Sounds to me as if you have little to no business knowledge (at least from the dribble that you produced in response to my comment). Often when debuting a new business, in order to catch a specific segment in a saturated market one offers deals and promotions (any idiot should know that, given the simplest of education). No, $28.00 is not bad, however given my experience in the business world I think a small shop can do better – depending up on overhead costs, etc.

Also, I pay roughly under $30.00 (with tip) and I have a phenominal stylist who does an amazing job. So your “Cheap hair cuts look cheap” isn’t 100% accurate.

In addition, I am well aware of the size of Chicago – but more specifically I am well aware of the specific market area known as Andersonville. Given my observation of the demographics of the area, $28.00 is pretty much the top tier in which people would want to spend. Andersonville is not Lincoln Park or the Gold Coast so I would advise the owner not to go any hire than his current rates.

It is clear to me that you, ldgialanella, feel that my comment was a personal attack on the owner, when in fact it was just merely friendly business advice. No where within that comment did I personally attack him and from what I can see, I welcomed him and his business.

I have often been a huge supporter of the entrepreneur and their dreams. So much so, that I am basing my entire career off of helping the entrepreneurial vision.

Next time, please for both yourself and the readers, look a little deeper into a person’s comments and make sure to back your thoughts up with some factual evidence. Honestly, your post makes you appear as if you are from a small town…  (oh, and “haircut” is one word, not two).

It’s not that hard to distinguish advice from criticism… of which, you completely gave to me.

If you are going to attack someone’s grammar and spelling, you may want to double check your own post.

Really? …out of all the paragraphs I composed, THAT is what you are attacking? Does that now make you feel like a big man who has contributed something to an intellectual conversation? If so, I really pity you… if not, please give you your actual analysis regarding the thoughts that I posted and leave all petty comments aside.

Pity really, here I am giving valid business advice and all I get is ridiculous, petty, and sub-par (if that) criticism. Pathetic.

Why are you so upset? You do realize that your business knowledge at most impacted 1 or 2 people, not to mention that your advice would be better suited for a conversation with the business owner, not trolling readers of a community blog.

$28 is not unreasonable, actually seems just about right.  If you took a look at the neighborhood, and competing businesses this would be obvious.  There are salons that charge in the upper $30′s on Clark Street, you have mom/pop boutiques that charge mid-upper $20′s, and Supercuts charges like $15.

Also consider what their rent is for such a location- with only one chair, I’m sure he knows how many cuts he needs to do to make a profit, or at least break even.

Seems Pop Hair’s price fits into their “market” just fine.

I think “A’Ville Guest” spent more time trolling community webpages than ever in an actual business or business class.
