Parking Meters Clubbed To Death

parking_meterLast week, Police issued an alert about vandalized parking meters in 7 North side Chicago neighborhoods that includes Edgewater. The machines sustained damage described as “breaking the display glass, credit card readers and display brackets by use of a blunt instrument or tool” which caused them to malfunction or shut down according to the release. The incidents happened between March 12-March 14.

Though most residents seem not to condone vandalism, they all seem to be holding onto anger and frustration due to the city’s privatization of the meters to LAZ Parking which drove prices skyrocketing. The prices are now some of the highest in the nation and residents feel as though they had no warning or say in the matter leading up to the unpopular decision.

In Edgewater alone, Parking has gone up from .25 cents per hour in 2008 to as much as $2 per hour. Many feel Mayor Rahm Emanuel has not done enough to counteract the extreme rate hikes which will be continued over the next 70 years when LAZ’s contract comes up for renewal.

The meters which sustained damage were at:

• 900 block of W. Chicago Ave on March 12, 2014 at 12:00 P.M.
• 900 block of W. Ogden Ave on March 12, 2014 at 12:00 P.M.
• 3700 block of N. Racine on March 12, 2014 at 3:00P.M.
• 700 block of W. Buckingham on March 12, 2014 at 3:00 P.M.
• 4500 block of N. Clark on March 12, 2014 at 3:00 A.M.
• 4800 block of N. Clark on March 12, 2014 at 3:00 P.M.
• 1600 block of W. North on March 12, 2014 at 3:00 P.M.
• 1400 block of W. Summerdale on March 12, 2014 at 3:00 P.M.
• 5700 block of N. Broadway on March 13, 2014 at 1:00 A.M.
• 1600 block of W. North on March 12, 2014 at 3:00 P.M.
• 1100 block of W. Rosemont on March 13, 2014 at 3:00 P.M.
• 1100 block of W. Waveland on March 12, 2014 at 3:00 P.M.
• 1600 block of N. Wood on March 14, 2014 at 4:00 A.M.
