Your confusion of my comment that the community needs to think outside the box as being "optimism" in a down economy is also off the mark.

My point was that the community needs to be encouraging development of something more than just retail and restaurants.

There are entrepreneurs in this city who don't need or want to base or grow their business in the Loop. Uptown used to be one of such "off Loop" employment centers, as well as north Milwaukee Avenue "the Polish downtown".

People just need get their heads out of their…

What we need is to not be in the worst economy since the Great Depression, one that is only going to get worse in years to come.

Maybe in a decade or three, they'll be some form of economic development. Maybe some rich Chinese businessmen will seek a potential American real estate development?

I really really would love a bookstore/cafe combo going up around here, doesn't have to be a big box like Borders,it can be a local business. Either way, it's nice to be able to just step out even if the weather is cold and grab a coffee while picking up the latest winter read or magazine.

I like to think there's still for a small to medium sized arthouse on the Far North Side, but maybe the economics of it say otherwise, what with cable and NetFlix and all.

"Quality of life" means more than simply having a wide selection of shops, bars and restaurants. It also means having employment centers that we can walk & bike to rather than (as convenient as it is) having to ride the el 45 minutes to the Loop.

And "the arts" can only take a neighborhood so far, especially when everyone tries to turn their hood into the next hot place for artists.

We have Loyola University progressively growing into Edgewater, that's a huge opportunity partner right there for R&D facilities and that jobs that go along with them.

There's also no reason we could not redevelop the old EMC site into both a park and something OTHER than apartments…how about some kind of small tech hub or a green biz incubator?

Technically Rogers Park, but a stones throw from the border.

1. a live music venue
2. a movie theater
3. Trader Joes

If we had those things, all my material needs would be officially met.
