Ollie’s & Gino’s North featured in Time Out Chicago

From Time Out Chicago’s “50 Unknown Bars”

Plenty of bars can pour you an Old Style draft for $3. But only this divey spot, hidden in plain sight near the Berwyn Red Line stop, has its namesake Ollie Latiker pouring it for you. Patron saint of every Edgewater drinker, Miss Ollie slings drinks with palpable joy, even after 35 years behind the bar. Open at 10am most days and closing around when Letterman comes on the TVs, the bar looks imposing from the outside but sparkles inside like a vinyl-padded, wood-paneled midcentury rec room. Extra shot Booking a shindig here won’t cost you a dime. 1064 W Berwyn Ave (773-784-5712).—Karl Klockars

Ollie’s owner Ollie Latiker was named an “Unsung Heroine” by the Cook County Commission on Women’s Issues earlier this year.

Gino’s North
No relation to the tourist trap to the east, this tiny Art Deco bar serves pizza and booze to Edgewater gays and straights. For the past 29 years, the gorgeous 81-year-old Peggy Gelsomino has manned the ovens, making the dough and sauce herself. Grab a seat at one of the five half-circle booths or at the curvy wood bar and order from the list of 17 bottled beers ($4–$4.75), or go for a cocktail ($3 margaritas on Wednesdays). Make sure to visit during the holidays, when ornaments and lights transform the room. Extra shot Check out the working fountain behind the bar. 1111 W Granville Ave (773-465-1616).—Laura Baginski
