The anticipated renovation of the lakefront trail will commence this week through Edgewater. The trail will be closed from Ardmore through Berwyn during the construction.

According to a statement from Alderman Harry Osterman, many residents have been asking about the plans. The project will separate the trail into two paths – one for bikes and the other for foot traffic. There has already been significant progress South of Berwyn including a new concrete walkway which has been added to Foster Beach.

Osterman added that the Park District originally wanted to separate and extend the concrete foot path from the bike path through the wide open parkland that currently sits between the lake and Lake Shore Drive. With the Alderman’s strong objection to the proposal, the foot path will now run side-by-side with the bike path from Berwyn to Ardmore.

Due to the temporary closure of the bike lanes during construction, bicyclists are encouraged to use Kenmore and Winthrop and head east at Foster or Argyle to link up with the lakefront trail. Pedestrians are able to walk along the lakefront.

The ambitious project headed by the Chicago Park District has been a work in progress. The trail’s renovation has occurred in segments since Spring 2017 and should be completed this year. The new path is expected to enhance the trail experience and ensure safety of its users.
