Vast mural will depict Chicago’s Indian roots

3,400-square-foot artwork to be created at Foster Avenue underpass and Lake Shore Drive

Thunderbirds take flight from a skyline in silhouette, corn mazes flourish under sunny skies, and one stinking onion, the Indian translation of chi-ca-gou settles its roots into soil.

While so far only sketched in paint on the Foster Avenue underpass at Lake Shore Drive, the images will take shape later this month as one of the bigger public art projects the city has known.

The 3,400-square-foot expanse of concrete in the Edgewater neighborhood crosses paths with old Indian trails, connecting new to old. It also provides a challenging but promising place for the project, which has been an unusual collaboration of artists, community members and youthful volunteers who will piece together the mosaic over the summer.
