LOVE WINS! Celebrate PRIDE This Weekend

LoveWinsEdgewater will join the celebration with the rest of the nation as the LGBT community can now legally marry.

In a historic U.S. Supreme Court decision, the justices ruled 5-4 that states cannot ban same-sex marriage. This establishes a new civil right and validates the discrimination many LGBT members had been feeling. Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote for the majority saying, “No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than they once were.”

However in a scathing dissent,  Justice Antonin Scalia mocked Kennedy’s words and delivered what many feel is a continued attitude of bigotry towards the LGBT community. “The substance of today’s decree is not of immense personal importance to me,” he wrote. “But what really astounds is the hubris reflected in today’s judicial Putsch.”

Scalia was in the minority though, as the Supreme Court and the country as a whole was ready to make a historic leap into one of the greatest civil rights issues of our time. It was also done on a historic day, right before PRIDE celebrations are to take part not only in Chicago, but all over the nation.

The 46th annual LGBT PRIDE parade will take place this Sunday, June 28, 2015. The parade, which will start in Lakeview around noon, will travel through the Uptown neighborhood. This year, organizers expect close to a million people celebrating a historic year in the community.

In Edgewater, the Backlot Bash 2015 heats things up in the parking lot behind Cheetah Gym Andersonville. The four-day event continues through Sunday with a great mix of music and entertainment. Billed as the “most rockin’ and most attended outdoor women’s festival taking place every Pride Weekend in Chicago,” this party always draws a great crowd. On Saturday between 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Backlot Bash becomes “Backlot Baby & Family Day.” This is a great opportunity to celebrate love with the kids in tow!

From everyone at Edgeville Buzz, have a great PRIDE and Celebrate Love!
