Keeping track of decaying L bridges

Northwestern University’s Infrastructure Technology Institute has partnered with the CTA in order to measure how much viaduct structures shift when L trains pass over them. The focus is on older viaduct bridges, many of which are located along the Red Line’s route through Uptown, Edgewater and beyond. Northwestern’s team has installed sensors in the bridge at Devon and Sheridan to take measurements, and then provide the results on a website monitored by both entities. According to CTA chief engineer James Harper, “the Infrastructure Technology Institute’s around-the-clock monitoring of the Devon-Sheridan bridge will provide an early warning to changes that could compromise the bridge’s integrity.”
